The cold weather will be here soon so stay warm with one of our hoodies or pullovers. We’re running low on some of our favorites so be sure to grab one before they’re gone. We have just a few Vinyl is Forever 05 pullovers in Medium left and our HEALTH crew neck pullover in Small is almost sold out. There are less than 5 Battles and No Age hoodies in medium left, which are both 70% off.

The Road to Rock coloring book is now available in all its 12×12 inch glory. These black and white pages are just begging to be colored! Your kids (or you- let’s be honest) will be busy for hours coloring your way through the rise of Jet Vegas to fame and stardom. Break out the crayons and order your copy here. If crayons aren’t totally your thing, we have a beautiful iPad app in the works. The app will have the entire story as well as multiple options for coloring. We’ll keep you posted on the app once we have a release date.

We’ve broken ground on the new collection, which will be designed by Gordon Hull, creative director and founder of the brand Surface to Air. Surface to Air just opened their NYC flagship store last week so be sure to check it out.

We took a bit of a summer hiatus on the Musician as Designer series but stay tuned for the next installments.

May 25, 2011

As we gear up for summer here in Greenpoint, the longer days of sunlight are already bearing dividends, with tons of new items in the shop and a slew of great events to share with you.

mad_sk_4801

The latest installment of the Musician as Designer series comes from the legendary Sonny Kay. In his already illustrious career, Sonny founded and ran the record label Gold Standard Laboratories (GSL) for over 14 years, all the while performing in iconic bands such as Angel Hair, The VSS and Year Future. The t-shirts feature an original digital collage, screen printed with 3 colors using water-based inks on organic black garments from Alternative Apparel. Only 60 shirts in edition, move fast risk missing out.

mad_nw_480

Speaking of selling out- the previous Musician as Designer T, by non other than LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang have been selling quite fast. We are completely out of sizes medium and large, so if you are a XS, S, or XL, we recommend picking up your shirt now.

We’ve got great new items from our friends over at Chunklet Magazine.

indierockcredtest_cover_480

The Indie Cred Test is “everything you need to know about knowing everything you need to know.” Yes, it is actually a test. And yes, it will educate you and prove to your friends how smart you really are.

vinylkills_480

Also from Chunklet, another genius piece of cultural insight (in t-shirt form). We’re strongly in support of this statement here at SSD HQ, quite simply: Vinyl is Killing the MP3 Industry.

Former collection bands Gang Gang Dance, Battles and Fucked Up are all releasing new albums this month. Gang Gang Dance dropped their new album Eye Contact on 5/10 on 4AD, Battles will release their newest album Gloss Drop on Warp Records in June, and Fucked Up’s album David Comes to Life (Matator Records) will also be released in June as well. The entire 2009 Collection on final closeout sale, with 70% off all remaining items.

dnjw_amj_book_pg17_480

For those of you in NYC, be sure to buy tickets to Joshua Light Show: Fulldome June 3rd-June 5th. In conjunction with Brain: The Inside Story, Josh White, one of the contributors to our Artist Music Journal series, will be putting on one of his amazing light shows in the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History. Tickets are $40 and can be bought here. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity.

Cheers to a great summer!

April 21, 2011

It seems that spring has finally sprung here in Brooklyn, and along with its arrival we’ve got some great new items and exclusive deals that we don’t want you to miss out on.

Right on the coattails of LCD Soundsystem’s final show (of which we are still reveling in the epicness of the show while simultaneously sincerely sad to see them go), we released the latest Musician as Designer shirt (Edition 13) by the lovely Nancy Whang. Nancy not only plays in LCD Soundsystem, but also the long time SSD faves Juan MacLean. There are only 60 in this series, featuring her original watercolor illustration digitally (yes, digitally) printed on organic Alternative Apparel garments. Get them now or forever regret missing out.

mad_nw_480

We’ve also got some great sales going on in our shop. Musician as Designer shirts by Sadie Laska and Lucky Dragons have been added to the sale this week, at 30% off. Our 2010 Collection oversized totes are still only $10/each, and all 12 installments in Volume One of the Artist Music Journals series are only $8 each. We would be bad friends if we didn’t warn you that the low stock that remains for the Daniel Higgs, Brian Roettinger (+ No Age), and EYE installments.

After an awesome pop up shop at Giant Robot LA in March we were able to get back some previously sold out items, including VIF ED 04 Crew T in Medium, the Beach House Hoodie in Medium from our 2010 Collection, and the Health Crew T in both Small and Medium. Make sure to check out our store to see what’s popped up!

For all of you in NYC, this Friday (April 22nd), Pantha du Prince is performing at Good Units / Hudson Hotel. We will have all of his 2010 Collection designs on sale, designed by the infamous Hisham Bharoocha, so be sure to stop by and say hi. Doors are at 10 pm.

Also for those in NYC, the talented Musician as Designer alum Tim Cohen will be performing with his band The Fresh and Onlys on Saturday (April 23rd) at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets are still available, and we hope to see you there.

Last but not least, be sure to sign up for the brand new RCRD Deals. Soundscreen Design will have an exclusive discounted package available next week. Head over to RCRD Deals for more info.

Artist Music Journal 12: Yamantaka Eye (of Boredoms)

amj12_productimage_480

Yamantaka Eye’s Artist Music Journal is available now and is not to be missed. Eye’s is the twelfth and final edition of Volume 1, and we could not think of a more fitting artist to close out the series. Eye used his journal as an opportunity to design for dozens of imaginary bands, including original album art and vinyl details. One of our very favorite releases in the series, AMJ 12 is available now, and as always, limited to 1000 copies.

January 7, 2011

Happy New Years to all friends and family of Soundscreen Design! We hope 2011 brings you happiness and success, for without your support we would not be where we are today. Thank you for your continued loyalty and encouragement, and we’re excited to share with you some of the new projects we’ve been developing.

Record Messenger Bag

sewing

Here in Brooklyn we’re big fans of bikes. But to be fair, who isn’t a fan of bikes? We use them to get around the city, run errands, and of course to visit our favorite record shops. So it makes sense then that we’ve designed a Messenger Bag with a fortified vinyl pocket to keep your records unharmed while traveling. Each bag has a unique recycled vinyl lining (sourced from highway billboard advertisements). Only 150 will be made in our first production run and will be available only through our web shop on February 1st.

Artist Music Journal 12 - Yamantaka Eye (of Boredoms)

amj_eye_pg1

It’s finally here…almost! The twelfth and final edition of our Artist Music Journal series, featuring the work of Eye, known primarily as the vocalist for the Japanese band Boredoms and also for his prolific visual art portfolio. He used this project as an opportunity to design for dozens of imaginary bands, including original album art and vinyl details. One of our very favorite and most original releases in the series! AMJ 12 from Eye will be available January 15th.

Musician as Designer

mad_sadielaska_480

Our Musician as Designer collection is still going strong, with our tenth release by the talented Sadie Laska of Growing. They say “sex sells,” in which case this edition of 60 shouldn’t last long. Grab one before they’re all gone.

mad_jp_480

Also out now is our newest design by the inimitable Justin Pearson of Locust, All Leather, and Retox (among others) and also the founder of Three One G records. The design is Justin’s original flyer from a show at USCD in January 1997 with 3 Mile Pilot, Dragon Rojo, Day Called Zero, The Crimson Curse and The Audience. If we’d been in San Diego, we would have been at this show.

All Musician as Designer T’s are printed on organic garments from Alternative Apparel.

Road to Rock Kid’s Coloring Book

picture-18

We’ll also be releasing our first kid’s coloring book, Road to Rock, which is the story of a fictional 80’s hair metal band and their rise to fame. Illustrated by Buffalo’s finest, Hero Design, if you like the Rockin’ Alphabet series you’ll be sure to love Road to Rock. We are targeting an early spring release.

Sales & Low Inventory

If you haven’t placed your orders for 2010 Collection items, now is the time. We’re running extremely low on many sizes/styles, especially for Band of Horses by Slow and Steady Wins the Race and Animal Collective by Rob Carmichael/SEEN. Sold out items have been removed from the shop, and we recommend you grab your sizes while they are still available (remember, we do not reprint). In the same vein, only a limited amount of our earlier Musician as Designer tees remain, many of which are on sale now. Also check out the special Artist Music Journal bundle, editions 07-10 for only $50 (4 for the price of 3).

dnjw_amj_book_pg1_480

Last but not least, we’d love to see you on February 17th at Issue Project Room for our belated AMJ 11 release party with Dan Nadel, Joshua White and featuring a performance by Gary Panter and Devin Flynn. Issue Project Room is located at 232 3rd Street in Gowanus, Brooklyn.

Thank you again for your continued support and looking forward to sharing more exciting news in 2011!

Touchable Sound

touchablesound01

Now available for pre-order is Soundscreen’s latest book, Touchable Sound: A Collection of 7-inch Records from the USA.

In an era that advocates streamlined product, and music at the click of a mouse, Touchable Sound celebrates those independent-minded bands and labels that make their own records and relish the opportunity to produce labor-intensive one-off artifacts. As Henry H. Owings puts it in his introduction, the book honors “those who invest countless hours of themselves to further their art. It’s about having an attention to detail and a disinterest in the bottom line.”

Organized by region, Touchable Sound focuses on unique, exquisite examples of American 7-inch-record packaging. Spanning nearly 25 years, it lovingly documents the obscure and the hard-to-find with help from musicians, artists, and label owners. Many of these records-by bands as diverse as the Locust, Olivia Tremor Control, Angel Hair, Stereolab, Los Crudos, the Melvins, and more—have never before been seen by a wide audience, and were originally pressed in extremely limited editions.

Curated by Brian Roettinger, Mike Treff, and Diego Hadis, the book features over 300 records and 600 bands that have set the bar for record packaging and design. Learn more about Touchable Sound here. The official release is set for October 5th, but make sure you reserve your copy by pre-ordering.

Come help us celebrate the release of Touchable Sound at Family Bookstore in L.A.

Event Details: October 4th, 7 p.m.
Family, 436 N. Fairfax Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90036

Featuring rare visuals of the psychedelic liquid light show, which backed live performances in the 60’s and 70’s of many of the greats, including The Doors, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix, this book offers a snapshot into what some consider the height of psychedelia.

Pre-order the AMJ here, ready to ship 9.23.

The 10th edition of our Artist Music Journals series is arriving shortly, featuring designer Brian Roettinger. Founder of the design studio/record label Hand Held Heart, Roettinger has received the highest praises for his album art and design for No Age and Liars. Speaking of No Age, Brian’s installment in the ongoing series is extra-special - the book comes with a one-sided 10″ record, featuring 3 exclusive tracks from No Age and Brian, who collaborated to present the musical accompaniment to Brian’s visual journal. Pre-orders will be available within the next 3 weeks.

We’re also really excited to start production this week on Touchable Sound: A Collection of 7-inch Records from the USA. The upcoming book features over 300 records from the past 25 years, essays from figures as talented and diverse as Justin Pearson (Three One G / Locust), Sam McPheeters (Vermiform / Born Against), Tom Hazelmyer (Amphetamine Reptile), Kristin Thompson (Simple Machines), and more, as well an introduction by Henry H. Owings (Chunklet Magazine). Each record was photographed, researched, and documented in this homage to labor intensive, artistically driven, exceptionally packaged 7’s, which continue to influence and define modern record packaging design.

Last but not least, stay on the look out for our 2010 Collection. It will feature five talented designers and ten amazing bands. The first release will feature Animal Collective and Atlas Sound, as designed by the talented Rob Carmichael/Seen Studio, as well as Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Pantha du Prince, as designed by the incredible Hisham Bharoocha. Earl plays guitar in the evenings with Woods and sells fine archaic audio artifacts through the labels Woodsist and Fuck it Tapes. He is a dual citizen of Warwick and Brooklyn, New York.
