Stay Tuned for these Upcoming Projects at SSD:

The 10th edition of our Artist Music Journals series is arriving shortly, featuring designer Brian Roettinger. Founder of the design studio/record label Hand Held Heart, Roettinger has received the highest praises for his album art and design for No Age and Liars. Speaking of No Age, Brian’s installment in the ongoing series is extra-special - the book comes with a one-sided 10″ record, featuring 3 exclusive tracks from No Age and Brian, who collaborated to present the musical accompaniment to Brian’s visual journal. Pre-orders will be available within the next 3 weeks.

We’re also really excited to start production this week on Touchable Sound: A Collection of 7-inch Records from the USA. The upcoming book features over 300 records from the past 25 years, essays from figures as talented and diverse as Justin Pearson (Three One G / Locust), Sam McPheeters (Vermiform / Born Against), Tom Hazelmyer (Amphetamine Reptile), Kristin Thompson (Simple Machines), and more, as well an introduction by Henry H. Owings (Chunklet Magazine). Each record was photographed, researched, and documented in this homage to labor intensive, artistically driven, exceptionally packaged 7’s, which continue to influence and define modern record packaging design.

Last but not least, stay on the look out for our 2010 Collection. It will feature five talented designers and ten amazing bands. The first release will feature Animal Collective and Atlas Sound, as designed by the talented Rob Carmichael/Seen Studio, as well as Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Pantha du Prince, as designed by the incredible Hisham Bharoocha. More info and pre-orders coming soon. In the meantime, stock up on the remaining designs from the 2009 Collection, all at 40% off.

Known for their original illustration and design work, as well as their longstanding tenure as founders and members of the musical outfit Aids Wolf, Seripop have a broad following around the globe. For their installment in the ongoing series, Seripop compiled years of original gig poster work, the first collection of its kind for the studio, which has made thousands of prints over the years.

Seripop presents Hoarding Skin, an installation piece, as their first solo exhibition in New York City. Debuting at Secret Project Robot Art Experiment in Brooklyn, Hoarding Skin will then travel to the Vienna Kunsthalle in June.

“We see the street poster as the “skin” of a city , growing and shedding organically, in constant flux, allowing citizens to make their temporary mark. With Hoarding Skin we seek to engage in playful discussion about both the individual and community’s role vis-a-vis freedom of expression within the urban landscape, via the colloquial and/or the monumental.”

Further, Seripop have contributed their installment in the ongoing Artist Music Journal series, edition 09.  The books are on press, and we will announce pre-orders shortly.  We are still selling subscriptions to the first year’s volume, all 12 installments.

About Post Typography -
Originally conceived as an avant-garde anti-design movement by Nolen Strals and Bruce Willen, Post Typography has come to encompass the pair’s creative collaborations including graphic design, illustration, conceptual typography, and custom lettering, with additional forays into art, apparel, curatorial work, design theory, and vandalism. Their work has received numerous fancy design awards and has been featured in such books as Ellen Lupton’s textbook Graphic Design: The New Basics, Phaidon’s Area 2, and Taschen’s Contemporary Graphic Design, as well as a new monograph of the studio’s work by European publisher Pyramyd Editions.

As longtime Baltimore residents, Strals and Willen maintain a strong presence in the local arts and music communities, contributing to numerous art and design exhibitions in Baltimore and beyond. In 2005 Post Typography curated Alphabet: An Exhibition of Hand-Drawn Lettering and Experimental Typography, a highly regarded art show that has traveled nationally to dozens of galleries and universities over the past five years. The studio recently wrote and designed Lettering & Type, a book on lettering and typeface design published by Princeton Architectural Press in Fall 2009.

Featuring source material from albums as diverse as Black Dice’s “Broken Ear Record” to The Meteors’ “In Heaven”, the 24 pages of this AMJ are a kind of visual remix of selections from Bongout’s record collection.
